All About Caponata

Sometimes, a full entree won’t be enough to fill your belly at a nice restaurant. Appetizers are a great way of getting over this hump! These dishes are traditionally smaller and can be eaten before a meal. There are a few of them that can be served as both an appetizer and entree, however. If you’ve looked on our menu before, you’ll likely see that caponata is one of these examples! Like many Italian dishes of the past, caponata has a rich history and is often confused with another European cuisine. We explain everything you need to know about caponata below!

What Is Caponata?

Caponata as a dish is pretty simple in terms of structure. You simply take fried eggplants, vegetables like tomatoes and onions and combine them with different seasonings and finishes. These include olive oil, celery, tomato sauce and capers to name a few. The dish itself hails from Sicily, but there are numerous local variants around Italy. These variations don’t change too much other than adding a few additional ingredients, but they can drastically alter the taste of the final product.

Caponata’s Common Impostor

As a dish, caponata is often confused for a dish with a more noteworthy name. The dish is called ratatouille, and it’s not to be confused with the Disney Pixar movie! Ratatouille is another vegetable stew that hails from France, so the two are from different countries’ cuisines. When compared with ratatouille, caponata is remarkably sweeter thanks to the additions of foods like raisins, but also has fewer ingredients than a ratatouille. Many of the ingredients found in caponata’s regional variants are found normally in ratatouille.

Regional Variants

As we mentioned before, caponata has a few regional variants that differ in terms of the ingredients put into them. The most common variation of the dish hails from Naples and is known as the cianfotta. Eggplant is the centerpiece of a caponata dish, but cianfotta dismantles that structure and gives equal attention to the different vegetables in the stew. Many of the ingredients are the same as in caponata, but differences include zucchini, bell peppers and potatoes. Like caponata, this dish can also be mistaken for ratatouille!
